The techniques underpinning the Katonah practices come from classical Hatha yoga, Taoist yoga and the panpyschic vision belonging to western esoteric philosophy.
The language of Katonah is metaphor and analogy; identifying the body as the abode, exploring the body as one’s instrument, the mind as the musician and the breath as the melody. The power of analogy allows the individual to use life experiences to define the personal and understand the collective.
The Katonah practices use the keys of breathwork to enter into states of meditation. Breathwork is incredibly accessible, practical, magical and transformative.
The practices of yoga transcend culture. We encourage self discipline, self responsibility, self actualization. The ultimate goals are empowerment, gratitude and graceful use of efforts.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) provides valuable insights for navigating seasonal transitions
TCM highlights the deep relationship between the human body and the natural world, particularly the rhythms of the seasons. In this system, each of the five seasons is associated with a specific organ system, as well as corresponding elements such as taste, color, and personality traits.
Much like yoga, TCM emphasizes balance, harmony, and the free flow of energy (Qi or prana) throughout the body. Integrating TCM principles into a yoga practice can help align the body with seasonal energies, support organ health, and enhance overall vitality. For example, choosing specific postures, breathwork, or meditative focus based on the current season’s element (like Wood in spring or Metal in autumn) can deepen the practice and promote seasonal wellness.
-
Kat has become fascinated with the seasons, especially from the lense and language of Katonah Yoga, her teachers, and TCM for the last couple of years. It has changed and impacted her mindset and practice immensely.
By exploring and teaching seasonal themes, she aims to offer others a meaningful framework for understanding the connection between the external world and their internal experience. In doing so, she hopes to help people gain insight into their inner landscape by observing the rhythms of the natural world around them.
I believe that through this practice, we can practically, actively, and consciously move through ourselves, with ourselves, in order to know ourselves better and what it is that we need.
-
Expect to dive deeper into:
- Katonah theory through the lens of TCM and Daoism
- good conversation, questions and journaling
- 5 Element theory specifically on WINTER and what it's brings us, pranayama, elements, postures and more.
Learning about the TCM seasons and 5 elemental theory can provide us with a good framework that we can use as a tool to better understand ourselves, where we are and what we need.
In this training we will move through a small practice for the season articulating its magic through the practicality of asanas, pranayama and theory of each seasonal element.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes the connection between the human body and the natural world, including the changing seasons. Each season (5) in TCM has an attendant organ system, a taste, a color, a personality type and more.

Ben Kalra (E-RYT 500, YACEP) is a yoga teacher based in North Carolina who travels internationally to lead trainings, workshops, and retreats. His teaching blends classical yoga philosophy with a creative approach to asana that emphasizes structure, imagination, and alignment.
He is a Katonah Yoga® teacher and continues to study with his mentor Abbie Galvin. He has also completed two 300-hour advanced yoga trainings through Shivakali Yoga and with Jonah Kest, deepening his skills in Vinyasa, pranayama, and meditation. While he primarily teaches in-person, Ben has also recorded online classes and courses for platforms including YogaRenew, Better Yoga, The Studio NYC, Sadhaka Studio, and Afternoon Yoga.
His teaching style is both serious and lighthearted. Ben views yoga as a slow-burning practice of liberation and as a tool for living well in a body and in the world. He believes good teaching should be clear, grounded, and occasionally humorous. He uses adjustments, props, and metaphor to help students cultivate a meaningful practice.
When the mat is rolled up, Ben enjoys photography, baking, and poetry. If you’d like to connect, you can reach him at ben-kalra.com/contact. -
